Ascoli Piceno Italy

Porta Tufilla

Tufilla Gate is situated along Lungotronto towards the bridge having the same name. When Ascoli was in the prime of its splendour, it was one of the seven gates of the town, so called because it rises up on a spur of tuff, the local sandstone. It was constructed by Camillo Merli in 1552-53 upon the foundations of another more ancient gate. On the peak of the arch there is the guards' loggia, which has a three-mullioned window with bases and capitals. Its covering is dome-shaped.
